Free Voluntary Reading
The Free Voluntary Reading course gives students the freedom to choose what they want to read according to their interests, language level and personal reading goals. Instead of following one compulsory text, learners can explore a growing collection of authentic English materials drawn from different genres and real-life contexts.
The course library includes short stories, folktales, magazine and newspaper articles, blog posts, interviews, biographies, reviews, reports, travel writing, informational webpages, cultural texts and popular-science articles. This variety allows every student to find materials that are enjoyable, meaningful and appropriate to their reading ability.
Students may read at their own pace and choose easier or more challenging texts as their confidence develops. After reading, they will complete a short follow-up activity, such as recording the text in their reading log, writing a brief personal response, answering comprehension questions, sharing a recommendation or participating in a discussion. These activities are intended to confirm genuine engagement and encourage students to think about what they have read.
The main purpose of the course is to help students:
-
develop regular and independent reading habits;
-
increase their exposure to authentic English;
-
improve reading fluency and comprehension;
-
expand their vocabulary naturally through context;
-
discover different genres, perspectives and cultures;
-
develop confidence in choosing and understanding English texts;
-
share reading experiences and recommendations with classmates.
Students are encouraged to read regularly rather than compete with one another. Each completed reading contributes to their individual progress. The more consistently they read and complete the related activities, the more bonus points or rewards they may receive from their teacher. Bonuses recognise sustained effort, thoughtful participation and progress—not simply reading quickly or selecting the shortest texts.
There is no single reading path that every learner must follow. Students can explore the collection freely, discover new interests and gradually move towards more demanding texts. The goal is to make reading in English an enjoyable, meaningful and lasting habit.
